On Sunday, April 6, 2025, the Greek-American community of Philadelphia gathered along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to honor the legacy of 1821 and celebrate Greek Independence Day with the annual parade. The day reflected the enduring strength of Hellenic heritage in the region and the unity of generations who continue to carry it forward.
The celebration began that morning with the Official Great Doxology at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, the service brought together clergy, Federation representatives, dignitaries, and members of the community in prayer. It offered a moment of solemn reflection and set a reverent tone before the festive events that followed.
By early afternoon, the Parkway came to life as churches, schools, student organizations, and regional societies gathered for the parade’s formation. At approximately 2:00 PM, following the singing of the national anthems and an invocation, the first groups stepped off from 22nd Street and began their procession east toward 18th.
Leading the parade were banners and icons, dignitaries, and the Hellenic Republic Presidential Guard—the Evzones—whose presence once again served as a powerful symbol of national pride. Following them came Greek day schools, parish communities, university societies, youth groups, and cultural associations, each bringing their unique identity and spirit to the celebration.
This year’s Grand Marshals, Drake and Maria Behrakis, marched in the parade and were recognized for their outstanding dedication to Hellenic causes and their continued support of the Greek-American community. Their presence underscored the importance of leadership rooted in service and cultural continuity.
From floats depicting key moments in Greek history to young children in traditional dress waving Greek flags, every section of the parade contributed to a wider story of remembrance and pride. Music, drumbeats, and cheers from the crowd created an atmosphere both joyful and meaningful.
The Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia and Greater Delaware Valley, which organizes the parade each year, extends its sincere gratitude to all who participated and supported the event. From marchers and performers to clergy, volunteers, and the City of Philadelphia, the parade was made possible by a community effort rooted in tradition and collaboration.
Following the parade, attendees gathered at Uptown Beer Garden, where the celebration continued in a more relaxed setting. Friends and families reconnected, shared stories, and reflected on another successful year of honoring Greek independence in the heart of the city.
