Great Doxology Service Marks the Start of Greek Independence Day in Philadelphia

On Sunday morning, April 6, members of Philadelphia’s Greek-American community attended the Official Great Doxology at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, marking the beginning of this year’s Greek Independence Day celebrations.

The service was held at the historic cathedral on South 8th Street and was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, who was joined by local clergy and faithful from across the region. Among those in attendance were representatives of the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia and Greater Delaware Valley, as well as dignitaries and guests from the Greek and Cypriot communities.

The Doxology offered a quiet, meaningful start to the day. It honored the memory of those who fought for Hellenic independence and highlighted the lasting connection between Orthodox faith and cultural identity.

As the celebrations continued with the parade and community festivities, the morning service served as a reminder that the foundation of the day lies in remembrance, gratitude, and shared tradition.

The Federation extends its sincere appreciation to Metropolitan Apostolos and the clergy of St. George Cathedral for leading the service and welcoming all who gathered in prayer.
