The 2025 Eleftheria Gala, held on Saturday, April 5 at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown, brought together members of the Greek-American community for an evening that honored both tradition and forward momentum. Hosted by the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia and Greater Delaware Valley, the black-tie event once again served as a cornerstone of the city’s Greek Independence Day celebrations.
The evening opened with a warm atmosphere during the cocktail and silent auction hour. Guests gathered in support of the Federation’s efforts to fund the annual parade and other cultural initiatives. The silent auction offered a way to contribute while participating in the evening’s celebration.
In the Liberty Ballroom, the formal program began with opening remarks and the introduction of the dais. The arrival of the Evzones, Greece’s Presidential Guard, brought a solemn moment of reflection. Their presence honored the legacy of independence and the ideals that continue to shape Greek identity around the world.
The Federation proudly presented the Eleftheria Medal to Caterina Papoulias-Sakellaris, in recognition of her longstanding contributions to the Greek-American community. Her service and advocacy have supported institutions and inspired individuals across generations. The evening also included the announcement of the 2025 Parade Grand Marshals, Drake and Maria Behrakis, whose leadership and generosity have advanced Hellenic causes nationwide.
Serving as Mistress of Ceremonies, Katie Katro of 6abc Action News guided the evening with professionalism and poise. Her presence underscored the value of public voices that highlight Greek-American stories and foster cultural visibility.
In keeping with its mission to engage the next generation, the Federation hosted a Young Adult Cocktail Hour, welcoming students and emerging leaders into the evening’s program. The energy and conversation in the room reflected a shared commitment to building on the legacy of those who came before.
As dinner concluded, the celebration continued with live music from Atlantis of Philadelphia and a special performance by KALOMIRA, who brought the ballroom to life and capped the evening with a sense of joy and connection.
The Federation extends its sincere thanks to all who supported the Eleftheria Gala—sponsors, donors, volunteers, and every guest who contributed to its success. As part of the broader Greek Independence Day celebrations, the event serves as a living expression of Hellenism in Philadelphia—rooted in tradition, shaped by community, and guided by shared purpose.
