The Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia and the Greater Delaware Valley begins a new term with steady leadership and a clear sense of direction. Following the recent elections, President Harry J. Karapalides thanked the delegates for their trust and spoke about the work that continues.
“Our Federation has become stronger, more visible, and more active,” said Karapalides. “Each year, we build on what came before, and that’s only possible because of the people who give their time and energy to make it happen.”
This steady progress has also deepened relationships with the Greek government, the City of Philadelphia, surrounding municipalities, and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey. According to the President, these partnerships reflect more than good will. “They look to us as the voice of the Greek American community,” he said.
That growing visibility was on full display during this year’s Greek Independence Parade. Held in April, the 2025 parade drew wide attention. With help from Cosmos Philly’s live coverage, messages of support and praise came in from across the country and beyond. “People from all over the United States, Greece, and other countries wrote to us,” said Karapalides. “They shared how much they enjoyed the parade and how impressed they were by the Gala the night before.”
Organized by Vice President and Parade Chairman John Vasiliou, the event was one of the most successful in recent memory. The Gala featured Grand Marshals Drake and Maria Behrakis and Eleftheria Award recipient Caterina Papoulias-Sakellaris. “Their presence elevated our Gala to new heights,” the President noted. “These are people known not just for their philanthropy but for their integrity and love of Hellenism.”
Looking ahead, the Federation has already begun preparing for next year’s celebration. The 2026 Greek Independence Parade will be held on April 26 and will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Karapalides described it as a unique opportunity. “It will be a historic moment for both Greece and America, and we plan to honor it properly.”
He also emphasized the importance of those who often work behind the scenes. “Our volunteers are the strong pillars we stand on,” he said. “Without their commitment, none of this would be possible.”
